چکیده

We derive a new semidefinite programming bound for the maximum k-section problem. For k = 2 (i.e. for maximum bisection), the new bound is least as strong as the well-known bound by Frieze and Jerrum [A. Frieze and M. Jerrum. Improved Approximation Algorithms for MAX k-CUT and MAX BISECTION. Algorithmica, 18(1): 67–81, 1997]. For k ≥ 3 the new bound dominates a bound of Karish and Rendl [S.E. Karish, F. Rendl. Semidefinite Programming and Graph Equipartition. In: Topics in Semidefinite and Interior-Point Methods, P.M. Pardalos and H. Wolkowicz, Eds., 1998.] The new bound is derived from a recent semidefinite programming bound by De Klerk and Sotirov for the more general quadratic assignment problem (QAP), but only requires the solution of a much smaller semidefinite program.

1 Parallel Semidefinite Programming and Combinatorial Optimization STEVEN

The use of semidefinite programming in combinatorial optimization continues to grow. This growth can be attributed to at least three factors: new semidefinite relaxations that provide tractable bounds to hard combinatorial problems, algorithmic advances in the solution of semidefinite programs (SDP), and the emergence of parallel computing. Solution techniques for minimizing combinatorial probl...

Open Problem: Tightness of maximum likelihood semidefinite relaxations

We have observed an interesting, yet unexplained, phenomenon: Semidefinite programming (SDP) based relaxations of maximum likelihood estimators (MLE) tend to be tight in recovery problems with noisy data, even when MLE cannot exactly recover the ground truth. Several results establish tightness of SDP based relaxations in the regime where exact recovery from MLE is possible. However, to the bes...

Exploiting semidefinite relaxations in constraint programming

Constraint programming uses enumeration and search tree pruning to solve combinatorial optimization problems. In order to speed up this solution process, we investigate the use of semidefinite relaxations within constraint programming. In principle, we use the solution of a semidefinite relaxation to guide the traversal of the search tree, using a limited discrepancy search strategy. Furthermor...

Approximate maximum-likelihood estimation using semidefinite programming

We consider semidefinite relaxations of a quadratic optimization problem with polynomial constraints. This is an extension of quadratic problems with boolean variables. Such combinatorial problems can in general not be solved in polynomial time. Semidefinite relaxations has been proposed as a promising technique to give provable good bounds on certain boolean quadratic problems in polynomial ti...

Semidefinite Relaxations for Integer Programming

We survey some recent developments in the area of semidefinite optimization applied to integer programming. After recalling some generic modeling techniques to obtain semidefinite relaxations for NP-hard problems, we look at the theoretical power of semidefinite optimization in the context of the Max-Cut and the Coloring Problem. In the second part, we consider algorithmic questions related to ...
